Day 1 Hitting the Trail

… and we’re off! A little later than planned but nothing new there. David packed all of his clothes in the trailer so hopped out of the shower to discover the only thing left to wear … on Canada Day … heading across Canada, was his I Love New York t-shirt! I was a little more apprehensive than I usually am. While I am very excited about this trip, seven weeks is a long time to be away from my darlings! We left with assurances they will be fine but that’s not the problem. They just really are fun people and I know the trip would be so much fun with them! Besides, look at those pasty torsos, don’t they look like they could use a little summer sun?

We spent the first few miles questioning what we were thinking in planning such a trip. We got over it quickly by the time we hit the open road!

Of course hitting the open road took a little longer than you might think! The odometer registered 106km at the 2 hour mark, and that included the return trip from Mississauga to Milton to fetch the trailer!! We passed the sign to Barrie after 3 hours. Now you might think that was awful, but there are things you can do at that pace that might not happen on every highway trip! Check out the beautiful fields of canola along the way that we had time to photograph.

A Holland Landing farm was sporting a scarecrow dressed for Canada Day, complete with waving flag. We were actually moving at that point and I regret I couldn’t get to my camera fast enough. Trust me, it was very cool! We also played leapfrog with the same group of people from Toronto to the highway separation north of Barrie for so long that I think we’re now friends. Especially entertaining was the guy, also towing an Outback, who would give a big grin and wave at me every time our trucks passed! After countless waves the grins were replaced with funny faces and gales of laughter. It helped while away the hours and by the time we went our separate ways I was sorry to lose my new friend!

Finally away from the GTA madness we stopped for a roadside picnic and arrived in Sudbury by 6:30 to discover we booked a night on the set of Trailer Park Boys!! The lady owner who checked us in was lovely and friendly but the set-up is hilarious! We had more distance from our neighbours when we lived in a townhouse. I am the only female on the grounds without multiple tattoos and we are the transients! These are clearly people’s summer (year round??) homes – one site has a deck with a blow-up hot tub!!! I kid not. I wouldn’t let David take pictures so there is no proof but trust me; I couldn’t make this stuff up!!

The beauty is though that God doesn’t get caught up in the same foolishness that I notice. He even sends hillbilly heaven spectacular sunsets!!
