Day 21 Golden

Raining this morning in Jasper so certainly time to be on our way! Although we travelled the Icefields Parkway to get here, the route south looks quite different than the route north. The mountains look different in different light and weather but they also seem to vary greatly from side to side. Of course the wildlife presenting itself at various points also commands attention! This morning it was bear and a small herd of elk that blocked the highway. Jeffrey certainly didn’t mind as he was over the seat and into the front to get pictures before I even realized what he was doing – and he is not a little boy!!!! Motivation is a powerful mover!

We also stopped at Athabasca Falls for a short hike and some picture taking of the largest (23 – metre), most powerful glacial falls in the mountains. On its way to the edge of the continent the Athabasca River flows from the Columbia Icefields to feed the Arctic Ocean.

Our journey into British Columbia was grand. We immediately noticed changes once again in the terrain. Funny since you would think that mountains are mountains but here they look different again. Thinking of the rocky/mountainous regions in Canada I was trying to pinpoint the differences I see. I’ve decided – Newfoundland (eastern) has stark mountain beauty, Cape Breton has picturesque mountains, Alberta has rugged mountains, and British Columbia has mountain grandeur – hardly definitive, but while one is not any better than another, they are all very different!
Nice of them to split the mountains so we could pass!

Tonight we are back in a trailer park! We felt we should divide up the days so as not to push Cecilia’s good nature and this was one that had space. It gives Jeffrey a chance to have a campfire though, and S’mores are being devoured as I post this blog! Tomorrow we continue into the Okanagan Valley. It sounds as if Nancy’s Aunt Chris has our stay there all looked after. Picnics, winery tours … more fun ahead!
